Educated consumers are demanding healthier meals from most restaurants,grocery stores, and catering services. Many establishments, including hospitals and residential care facilities, hire experienced chefs and registered dieticians to oversee the preparation of fresh and healthy meals made from scratch with fresh ingredients. This requires a continuing supply of cooks and food preparation workers. In addition to community college programs, the American Culinary Federation (ACF) offers a registered apprenticeship training program for cooks that includes significant work experience. ACF also offers sixteen different certifications from culinarians and sous chefs to pastry chefs and executive chefs. Employers prefer candidates with work experience, culinary creativity, nutritional knowledge, basic business skills,and customer service skills.
